layout?

About the site...who has access to the design and layout of the blog?  Can only Whitney change it, since she's the originator, or can anyone with authorship privileges change the design?

I'm itching for something with a little more gusto.  We seem so plain vanilla as it is now!

Congratulations FAN members!

I received an email this morning from Ryan Miller, ASU gallery coordinator, informing us that our proposal mapping / connections was approved by the exhibition committee and the Fiber Arts Network will be sallying forth on her maiden voyage in the Step Gallery February 5-12, 2010.

We'll need to send people to a meeting on January 22nd for exhibitors.  Keep your eyes out for an email with specifics regarding exhibition requirements, gallery rules, etc etc.

Here's the lowdown to refresh your memories and kickstart your winter break studio practice:

(This is the proposal narrative submitted for us to the committee last month)

the Fiber Art Network would like to present:
mapping / connections

In many ways, the definition of contemporary fiber art could be described as a sensitivity to the constructed surface; the creation of an expanse by the joining together of related parts.  Beyond weaving, knitting, or printing as ends to themselves, fiber brings together a strong sense of craft with a desire to communicate conceptual and philosophical concerns.  Repeated patterns and objects often come into play as obsessions and compulsions, connections to time and history, and social commentary.  We live our lives surrounded by textiles: from birth onwards covered by and engaged with clothing, upholstery, and fibrous surfaces.  Consequently, the art created from these materials cannot help but connect in an intimate way to familiar objects from our lives.

The newly-formed Fiber Art Network serves as a collective of ASU undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and recent alumni who all seek a stronger sense of community and support for contemporary fiber artists living and working in the surrounding area.  The mission of FAN is to provide an outlet for experimentation, critique, workshops, and dialogue pertaining to current issues in fiber outside of the classroom, but still in an academic community.  We would like for this exhibition, to take place in Step Gallery in the spring of 2010, to serve as an introduction to the association and its members.

The conceptual focus of this exhibition is the intersection of people and places.  Topographical maps, travel and journeys, or a shift from one perspective to another (or one state of mind to another) provide inspiration for the works within the show.  With each work fitting within a set size restriction of 18”x18”x18”, a stronger sense of continuity is established across the exhibit and between the members of FAN, all of whom have the option of participating.  The work may be newly created specifically for the show, or may fit within a body already being developed by a participating artist.  Artists may choose to submit works in 2 or 3-dimensions.

Printing with Soft Scrub

Hi, everyone!

Today in class, Claire gave a quick little tip about printing with Soft Scrub. After class, I dyed some fabric and tested it out -- my results weren't satisfying, but I also don't know how the fabric I used (100% cotton) would discharge with another method.

I did a quick search online, and found the following:

...perhaps we can adapt this to be more conducive to the kind of printing most of us do?

Something to think about...

Thank you Elise, Renai and Aaron for the great show ideas generated last weekend. While we are voting I wanted to throw out an idea that came up in the meeting that I wanted us to reconsider. What if for this first show we create work inspired by the winning idea but work within a size restraint. I think this could be a great tool to help unify the work. It could be 12x12 or 15x15 or a rectangle? Take a look at how diverse and great the work looked in the Mesa Contemporary Arts Benefit and think it over. - Brooke

A helpful embroidery site

So, I'll start it off...hopefully everyone received the invitation, I guess you wouldn't be looking here if you hadn't. I've been doing a lot of embroidery lately and was having some problems remembering some of the stitches we learned in Fibers I....and books aren't always the clearest, especially for a left hander. I found this website while looking for some descriptions and I LOVE it so I thought I'd share. They have video instructions for pretty much any stitch you could want!

Scroll down to the bottom to see all the stitches.

Hope you like!

Whitney (i don't know if it's going to tell you I wrote this)
